National Doctor’s Day – Honouring the Healers

📅 Observed on July 1, 2025
✍️ By Dr. Sagar Joshi, Consultant Urologist, Laparoscopic, & Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Vadodara, Gujarat

🎓 Why July 1st? A Tribute to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy

National Doctor’s Day in India is observed on July 1st to commemorate both the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a pioneering physician and statesman who made extraordinary contributions to Indian medicine and public life.

He served as the second Chief Minister of West Bengal and was honoured with the Bharat Ratna for his visionary work. Observing Doctor’s Day on this date serves as a tribute to every doctor who selflessly serves the nation’s health.

🩺 The Role of Doctors in Society

Doctors are not only medical professionals — they are:

  • Educators who promote awareness and preventive care
  • Counsellors offering support during vulnerable times
  • Advocates for ethical medical practice and healthcare access
  • Guardians of dignity and quality of life

In today’s world of advanced medicine, doctors continue to be a critical bridge between scientific knowledge and human empathy.

🤝 Mutual Responsibility: Doctors and Society

Healing is a shared journey. The relationship between doctor and patient must be built on trust, transparency, and mutual respect.

Doctors’ Responsibilities:

  • Deliver evidence-based, ethical care with compassion
  • Maintain transparency and patient confidentiality
  • Continuously upgrade medical knowledge and skills
  • Treat all individuals equally, without bias

Society’s Responsibilities:

  • Respect doctors and the healthcare profession
  • Trust the medical process and avoid misinformation
  • Reject violence and abuse against medical personnel
  • Participate actively in preventive health practices

Only when both doctors and society work together can we build a truly patient-centric, efficient, and humane healthcare system.

🧠 My Perspective as a Urologist & Kidney Transplant Surgeon

As a Urologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon, I am privileged to assist patients through deeply personal and life-altering medical conditions — from kidney stones to bladder dysfunction to transplantation.

These are more than medical interventions. They represent journeys of courage, uncertainty, and recovery — where science and empathy must work hand in hand. It is in these moments that the true spirit of medicine reveals itself.

Every restored life, every relieved patient, reminds me that medicine is a mission — not just a profession.

🌟 Conclusion: A Day to Reflect and Recommit

National Doctor’s Day is more than a celebration. It is a reminder of the sacred trust placed in every doctor — and the responsibility we hold to honour it, every single day.

Let us continue to serve, educate, and heal — with integrity, empathy, and a commitment to lifelong learning. And let us work with society to nurture an environment where healthcare is safe, respectful, and accessible for all.

To my fellow doctors – thank you for your unwavering dedication.
To our society – thank you for your trust.
